Share Issue: Multi-Jurisdictional Information Sharing and Coordination
This article describes the benefits of multi-jurisdictional information sharing and coordination through intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and how to provide an effective system across a region. Most well-traveled roadways cross more than one jurisdiction which means that multiple intelligent transportation systems within the region see parts of the transportation picture but not the whole. It results in improperly utilized resources and longer response times to incidents. Multi-jurisdictional information sharing ensures a better response to incidents and better management of traffic flow. The article describes what to consider when implementing a multi-jurisdictional information sharing system and the challenges that may be encountered.
