Public Health's Care: The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) is Currently Examining How Best to Cope With Several Large-Scale Health Care Incidents Occurring Simultaneously

This article describes the efforts being undertaken by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to plan for transportation complexities of a public health epidemic or incidents requiring isolating a particular area to halt the spread of disease. Transportation providers have several challenges in dealing with such a scenario: sustaining transportation within the quarantined area so citizens can obtain necessities; delivering goods from outside into the area; and sustaining transportation outside the area by re-routing trucks, buses, or trains. The DOT’s Emergency Transportation Operations Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Initiative project has determined there are three areas of activity to be explored: 1) how public health and safety communities believe such incidents would transpire, 2) developing a concept of transportation operations for these situations, and 3) creating ITS-based decision support materials to assist transportation agencies respond to such emergencies.
