CONCRETE TEST PAVEMENT ON THE WEST BOUND LANES OF THE OLBY-RINGSTED MOTORWAY

BETONVEJSPROVESTRAEKNING PA VESTMOTORVEJEEN OLBY-RINGSTED

In August-September 1976 a trial pavement, 4 km long, was carried out on the westbound lanes of the Koge-Ringsted motorway, in Denmark. The pavement is a 20 cm concrete slab without reinforcement. The object of this trial project is to investigate the durability and skid resistance of concrete pavements in Denmark, built with Danish materials. For the trail pavement six different types of concrete was used, with varying sand, cement proportions. All of the concrete types had a w/c-ratio of approx. 0.40, and a cement content of 335 kg/cu m. To one of the concrete types a superplasticizing agent was added. Two different designs of the concrete surface were used, viz. transverse grooving, and exposed aggregates. The grooving was made by vibrating a symthetic rubber mat down into the surface, using a vibrating beam. The spacing of the grooves varies - according to a British system - with a view to avoiding resonant noise. The execution of the trial pavement confirmed the feasibility of placing and compacting concrete with a w/c-ratio around 0.40 using a slipform paver. Placing of superplasticized concrete, on the other hand, has caused considerable problems - expecially with regard to regularity of the finished surface. These problems will have to be solved before this type of concrete can be regularly used for road pavements. The methods used for creating the surface finish as designed have proved to be satisfactory. However, further development of these methods will be required with a view to suitable utilization for large scale projects. The contraction joints are not provided with dowel bars, except for two short sections, each of them 50 m long. In one section dowel bars are installed over the full width of the lanes concerned, and in the other section only the joints in the "slow" lane are provided with dowel bars. All of the joints were sawn in the hardened concrete. It is planned that regular observation and recording of developments in regard to the trial pavement be undertaken, and hereunder particularly in regard to skid resistance, measured by means of "Stradograph", and surface texture, using the sand patch method and the British pendulum tests, such observations and measurements to be made at six-months' intervals. The trial pavement will, furthermore, be inspected every six months, with a view to recording data relating to damage, if any, to the concrete surface. This present report describes the work related to planning and execution of the trial pavement. /Author/
