Controlling Transportation-Related Noise and Vibration: Examining the Sources, Preventing Impacts

This article provides an introduction to this edition of TR News, which focuses attention on transportation noise. The author points out that transportation professionals have embraced a three-pronged approach to noise control, addressing control of the source, land use planning and control, and mitigation at the receiver, or path control, to serve a multimodal system. He states that the articles in this issue of TR News cover a range of topics and research, as well as national, state, and local activities to mitigate and avoid the effects of noise and vibration.
