Maintaining Optimism: The Good News for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Suppliers is that the Market is in Full Recovery Mode
A strong growth in traffic and an aging jet fleet has brought optimism to the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) market. Stronger-than-expected traffic in 2005 has caused airlines to fly their jets harder. In addition, many jets were ordered in 1996 and 2000 and are coming due for major overhauls. At the same time, few airlines are investing in new repair facilities. Spending on MRO is growing, slowly but steadily and, as long as airlines can survive the tough competition economically, MRO work should continue to experience healthy demand. Outsourcing is notably more common in 2005 than the year before, with more than 50 percent of airlines’ work being sent to outside vendors. North America is the biggest market, followed by Asia or Europe, depending on how it is measured. The article describes the swift transition, especially on the part of legacy airlines, and how it plays an important role in the bankruptcy process. The impact of other factors, such as the rise in regional jets, is also discussed. The article includes a profile of the latest big MRO provider, created with the merger of Air France and KLM.
