Integrated Transport Policy and Telematics -- Telematics Master Plan Austria
With the enlargement of the EU by 10 Eastern European countries on 1 May 2004, Austria got nearer to the geographic heart of Europe. In Austria as in most European countries traffic volumes are rising by more than 2 % per year and so do average km's traveled per person and day (1950 -8 km, 2003 - 38 km) As the infrastructure of the single modes of transport can not be expanded in parallel with the current growth rates of transport volumes a network approach of the transport flows with an important role for ITS Intelligent Transport Systems is necessary. In 2003 the Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology in Austria has initiated a Telematics master plan Austria to define the role of single telematics applications in the transport sector and rate them according to the macroeconomic cost benefit ratio for the transport system. The work consisted of a strategy for the applications of telematics, and the establishment of a wide knowledge base in an international context. The overall results are 3 packages of measures of investments with volumes of 400, 355 and 300 Mio EURO in the next 15 years. The implementation will be organized with the help of a technical secretariat and regular monitoring of single project activities. Furthermore this structure will also make it possible to adapt the knowledge base to future requirements and requests of transport policy.
