Integrated Electronic Tolling and Traffic Management on Turkish Highways
As automatic electronic tolling becomes the predominant tolling element on Turkish Highways a new paradigm for traffic management is being shaped. In this paper we discuss how the On Board Units and the electronic tolling data may be used for real-time traffic surveillance on tolled highways and freeways (ring roads) around major metropolitan areas. Design issues pertaining to the specifics of the data network, travel time measurement, camera based surveillance and information dissemination of the highway traffic system are addressed in the context of a specific project for the European Motorway and Istanbul’s ring roads.
