In Vehicle Power Management Approach for IEEE 1394 Networks

AMI-C 1394 Technical Expert Group (TEG) has completed the extension of the 1394 specifications to address the In-vehicle Network Power Management requirements and has also developed an Embedded Proof of Concept (EPoC) to verify these extensions of specifications. This paper describes a schema to manage the system wake-up and shutdown procedures for 1394 networks based on these newly extended specifications. The high level requirements of this schema define a Host Centric Network power management approach which can be implemented on both copper and optical harnesses. The Architecture defines the core software/hardware elements such as system power master, local power manager, etc. It also defines the interactions and messages between these elements and incorporates them within the framework of AMI-C Communication Protocol. EPOC implementation is based on optical repeaters with electrical wake-up capabilities, electrical P-Mode Line, emulators, and some legacy devices connected through a customer convenience port (CCP). The wake-up circuitry is based on Intelligent Power Switch (IPS) which has nearly zero power consumption during the sleep state, because IPS leakage current is less than 10 microamperes. Test results have confirmed the feasibility and correct behavior of the schema for the selected test scenarios including wake up and sleep of the network nodes.
