Caltrans Public Education Research Study
This report describes a Public Education Research Study undertaken by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Storm Water Program for determining the effectiveness of public education as a best management practice (BMP) for reducing the volume of pollutants that enter the California highway storm drain system. The report summarizes activities undertaken as part of the study, evaluates the effectiveness of the public education program, and recommends approaches to be considered by Caltrans when planning for and implementing future public education programs. The report provides background information on the reasons for undertaking the study, summarizes program research and strategies, describes program activities and materials, assesses the success of the program, lists endorsements and awards earned by the program, and presents conclusions and recommendations.
