Audit of signalised intersections - recommendations for practitioners

As part of an initiative by the Signals New Zealand User Group (SNUG) to achieve better consistency with the design and operation of traffic signals in New Zealand, Transfund funded the development of a signal audit methodology. A sample of 123 signal installations were audited by April 2004. The aim was to raise awareness about commonly occurring safety and efficiency issues. The published findings of the audits were divided into six sections: crashes at traffic signals, intersection and lane layout, signal post and display location, phasing and operational issues, pedestrian issues and cyclist issues. The main findings are summarised. Recommendations are made for intersection and lane layout, signal post and display issues, phasing and operational issues, and cyclist and pedestrian issues.
