Junction design - a view from the sharp end

The author gives his opinion as a consultant with the Halcrow Group on junction design. He highlights the problems with implementing schemes originating from feasibility studies in transportation planning departments. The challenges to adding traffic signals to roundabouts are outlined. Factors that are often not considered include installing traffic signal poles, vehicular access, and pedestrian access on footways. The author describes his experiences with installing pedestrian crossings on junctions as part of the Safe Routes to School schemes. He emphasises the need to be specific in Employer's Requirements documents. He discusses challenges to signallers in competitive tender processes, drawing content, problems for crossing users when the signal sequence is changed, adding traffic signals in the vicinity of other traffic signals, signal control on a length of road, and remote monitoring of traffic signals.
