Study of utilization of crossfall and rut depth indicators in pavement performance contracts

Road condition measurements have been executed with laser-based technologies in Finland since year 2003. Within new measurement methods it is possible to produce high quality road surface indicators, like crossfall, gradient and rut depth indicators, and many other already known indicators or some totally new indicators, like RMS -indicators. Aim of this study was to consider measured surface data and to learn to use road surface indicators in more complex manner and to define and to predict road condition. Road surface data used in this study covered about 25 500 km of paved roads of the Finnish road network and was measured during summer 2003. The most important indicators in this study were crossfall indicators (crossfall regression and crosfall surface line) and maximum rut depth. Crossfall indicators and crossfall algorithm developed in addition of study were used to solve the amount of lack in crossfall on the road network. Rut depth data were used to express distribution of rutting on paved road network and its subnetworks. Formulae and estimations were used to calculate how rutting will proceed on paved road network. In relation to study the amount of lack of crossfall on the road network were 37% of whole network included on study. On main road network the amount of lack of crossfall were about 26% and the inferior road network the amount of lack of crossfall were about 51% of the whole network included. Through statistical analysis in different and specified categories were developed formulae to calculate rutting of pavements caused by studded tires. Classification of the used data in the analysis was made according to traffic flow, road width and road geometry. The formulae developed were taken into account asphalt mixture and aggregate and were written out on both 1- and 2-carriageway roads.
