Finnish Road Administration's four years Road Asset Management research program (2003 - 2006) is in progress. The main objective of the research program is to establish the necessary knowledge base and information management systems as well as systematic framework for effective management of the road networks. The research program is now in the middle. This report is a survey of first two years with presentation of coming projects. For a start there is a description of objectives of road asset management. According to it, Road Administration should have data, methods and knowledge to manage its road asset to fulfill road management goals. Goals are variable in nature and thus the amount and condition of road asset, maintenance of the data and analysis of the data should be mastered in such a way that these goals can be fulfilled and questions concerning asset management can be answered. The amount of companies that have participated in competitive bidding is much bigger. With the results thus far the road network and its condition can be described better and more reliable. Bridge inspections and their quality control have been improved. Bicycle and pedestrian roads are now in Road Register, their condition is invented and their maintenance can be programmed at the same way as paved roads. Strategy to manage road furnitures has been defined. New condition models for paved roads for network and programming level have been developed. Tools and models for network level bridge management have been implemented. Thus results have been achieved in all road assets and better tools for planning and programming has been developed. Main projects are development of maintenance management for gravel roads, implementation of automated crack measurements, utilization of road asset and bookkeeping data, definition of information services and development of communication on road management needs.
