Bridge management in Australia

Bridge maintenance in Australia is an important component of road system management. In 2002-2003 the maintenance of 10,353 bridges on the National highways and arterial roads totalled AUD 100 million. The bridges are constructed using different materials such as wood, iron, masonry, steel and concrete, with 42% constructed of timber and 50% of concrete. Most bridges are managed via an inspection system and associated risk based ranking systems. A four-tiered bridge inspection regime has been developed. Information obtained from the detailed (Level 2) inspections provides an indication of bridge condition. This is used as the input into a qualitative risk management system prioritising bridge maintenance works. This is based on the probability of failure and consequences of failure and a range of factors including economic factors.
