Trends reunited: is Ethernet tolling's next big thing?

Trends in toll collection are reviewed. The trend towards open-road toll collection continues with a variety of technologies used to measure travel time on corridors. Toll authorities continue to upgrade systems to include incident detection management (increasing the number of dynamic message signs and density of CCTV cameras and more Roadway Weather Information Systems). Toll tags based on passive/reflective technology are increasingly being replaced with active technology tags. Use of a common toll tag for interstate applications in the USA has some way to go due to political factors. The SONET and ATM technology used on toll roads in the 1990s is being replaced by Ethernet systems. Factors driving this conversion include the development of IP-CCTV cameras and toll readers with Ethernet interfaces, economics and the need for sharing video with state freeway management centres and regional emergency management centres.
