Is red the new amber?
The attitudes of 1000 UK motorists and their driving habits were surveyed for Traffex 2005 by Omnicar. Over half of drivers between the ages of 17 and 34 years old admitted breaking the speed limit. Over one quarter of drivers in Scotland and one in five in London and the South East admitted talking into their mobile phones rather than using a hands-free set while driving. The respondents perceived the following practices as extremely dangerous: being over the alcohol limit, talking into a mobile phone, sending or reading a text message, speeding outside a school or hospital, ignoring a stop sign, jumping a red light and tailgating. Women perceived a higher level of danger than men and the lower age group of 17-34 had a lower perception of danger. Fines were regarded as the preferred form of penalty. Only 29% had heard of the Traffic Management Act 2004 and the powers it gave authorities to penalise motorists for moving traffic offences.
