Street tread
This article describes developments in tyres for coaches. New winter tyres for coaches from Goodyear (Ultra Grip WTD) and Dunlop (SP362 steer axle winter tyre) are described. Steer axle pattern tyres from Continental UK (HSR1 and XZA 2 Energy tyres) and Michelin (XZE 2 Plus) are outlined. The benefits of these tyres in terms of noise, fuel use and comfort are considered. Tyres developed for use on drive axles fitted with single rather than twin rear wheels on either side are discussed. These include Bridgestone's Mega Drive single drive axle tyre and the X One from Michelin. Alloy tyres have been introduced to save weight. Competition to UK brands from foreign imports such as Regal tyres from South Africa and J K tyres from India is discussed. Other new developments include AirCare's special valve cap that tells the driver when the tyre's pressure is lower than it should be, the Hub-lift External Lifting Device and an alternative to lead wheel weights, Equal, from Rima Tip Top UK, and a safety wheel nut from Disc-Lock Europe.
