The X-factor
This article considers the use of next-generation Road Weather Information System (XRWIS) technology in the UK. Existing RWIS technology is over twenty years old and needs to be interpreted on an individual basis by highway engineers to determine road salting priorities. XRWIS is designed to remove the guesswork by providing a separate road weather forecast for each salting route and giving an initial prediction on salting requirements. The front-end map is updated as required by the user, and thresholds for colour coding of temperature are agreed at installation, being upgraded by neural network self-learning. The database contains geographical and road data, and the XRWIS combines the mesoscale weather forecast with the microclimate of the route to predict salting needs in priority order. Thermal geomatic surveys could lead to future developments in selective salting.
