Mattstetten-Rothrist opens

This article presents an overview of the development of Switzerland's first section of 200 km/h railway, between Mattstetten and Rothrist. The line was planned to lie along existing transport corridors wherever possible. There are only three sets of points within the new track section, all at the Wanzwill junction. The track is made up of rails laid on concrete sleepers on ballast in the open air, and of slab track in tunnels. The formation includes a thin asphalt layer to aid drainage and discourage plant growth. Originally the signalling system was to be the European Train Control System (ETCS) but trials showed it to be unreliable and so conventional signalling was installed, with plans to introduce ETCS at a later date.
