Maintenance issues in the design of long-span cable-stayed bridges
This paper discusses specific maintenance issues of long-span cable-stayed bridges. Emphasis is placed on the designer's tasks to address these, and their proper inspection routines; and the possibilities of new monitoring and field-measurements technologies can add to this work. As a case study, the Neva Cable-Stayed Bridge in St. Petersburg, Russia is considered, in which both designer-borne maintenance manual and comprehensive health-monitoring system is used. It is demonstrated that when new challenges are taken by innovative structural solutions or by world-record class geometric dimensions, designer's expert view on critical maintenance issues and on verification studies become essential.
