Detached reality
This article describes the development of tyres and wheels for racing cars, focusing on the development of detachable rims, the centre-lock Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels, and BMW's disk wheel. Early Grand Prix cars often carried their spare rims and tyres in stacks surrounding a cylindrical fuel tank behind the seats. The advantages of detachable rims, such as those on the Renault 4CV and G-type ERA, include space saving. Mounting a spare tyre on its own rim to be attached to the spider that could be integral with each hub would reduce unsprung weight and allow a better distribution of stresses. The benefits to tyre manufacturers and car manufactures are considered.
