Future of fuel savings
In the USA, NASA is seeking to boost airspace system capacity and efficiency, resulting in fuel savings. The Advanced Airspace Concept (AAC) is one approach being considered. It could increase efficiency by 15% by providing optimal routes that cut airlines direct operating costs. It could also increase landings on existing runways by 25%. The automated system approach would allow aircraft to fly optimal trajectories, e.g. to divert around storms, without pilot-controller radio calls. The system would reduce the workload of controllers, allowing them to focus on solving strategic control problems and managing traffic flow in unusual events. The principles of the AAC are outlined.
