Water spraying equipment and the maintenance in the large-scale tunnel
The new Tomei-Meishin Expressway is now under construction by the Japan Highway Public Corporation (JH). The tunnels of this new expressway are planned to have twice the cross-section areas of a conventional tunnel 60m2 vs 115m2. However, the smoke behaviour and heat transfer in case of fire in this kind of large-scale tunnel are not well known. Furthermore, the performance and effect of water spraying equipment installed for supporting evacuation and fire fighting as well as minimizing a fire is not clear. For this reason, several experiments have been carried out. This paper reports on the fire experiment plans and experimental results which were carried out in the Shimizu No 3 tunnel of the new expressway in 2002. Moreover, it introduces the maintenance management method of water spraying equipment. (A)
