Sleepers: the secret weapon
Replacing rotting timber sleepers on the UK railways is a constant problem. A set of rail-mounted machines and attachments for existing rail/road vehicles (RRVs) made by Geismar in Germany is making the job easier. The equipment includes ballast looseners and removers, a sleeper changer, drills and fastening fixers and a mini-tamper. Two sets of the equipment have been bought by Network and practical trials of the equipment have been run by Network Rail and Mowlem Railways. Mowlem is using the equipment to upgrade stretches of rural track in Lincolnshire, Devon and Cornwall. Details are given of the use of the equipment to replace sleepers near Boston, Lincolnshire.
