Where is the evidence that speeding is a road safety issue?
RTA figures show that speeding is estimated to be a factor in about 40 per cent of fatal crashes and about 15 per cent of injury crashes. There are some in the community who believe that road safety authorities greatly overstate the relationship between speeding and crashes, and that these authorities must have an ulterior motive for their emphasis on speeding as a key road safety problem. This raises many questions. What evidence do we have? How robust is it? Are we relying on a small amount of evidence from one methodology/source or is there abundant evidence using a wide variety of methodologies/sources? If speeding is a problem, is it primarily extreme speeding, or is travelling a little over the speed limit a substantial part of the problem?
