Evaluation of Galvanic Battery Power Supply for Cathodic Protection

This report discusses the performance of a galvanic battery power supply system specifically designed to provide DC electricity for cathodic protection of concrete structures. The batteries were tested under controlled laboratory conditions and at three cathodic protection actual field sites. All field sites were bridge structures owned and operated by the Florida Department of Transportation and were located in extremely aggressive corrosion environments. Several arrangements of the batteries were evaluated including: stand alone service, and multiple batteries connected in parallel and/or in series. The evaluation also included providing cathodic protection to one or several bridge substructure components. Parameters observed included measurements to determine if adequate cathodic protection was provided and to determine the overall service life of the battery under different battery combination arrangements. The general findings indicate that the batteries have the capability to provide adequate cathodic protection to concrete structure components and that the operational service life is concurrent with the manufacturer service rating. The study also concluded that for actual applications, the battery system should be carefully designed to attain the required service life. Such design should include an economic analysis of all the power supply alternatives.
