Road Safety: The Solutions
In this article, two industry leaders discuss how improved safety equipment and highway design can help provide road safety solutions. One answer to reducing the number of injuries and fatalities caused by traffic accidents is to use technology to turn roads into "forgiving highways" that help protect motorists when they make mistakes while driving. Forgiving highways can incorporate such devices as crash cushions (also known as impact attenuators), advanced warning systems, road weather information systems, and uninterruptible power supplies to keep traffic signals operating in the event of power outages. Enhanced driver guidance in the form of new signs and better pavement markings and illumination has also proven to be effective in reducing highway accident fatalities.
