An Efficient Protocol For Wireless Map Streaming
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has sponsored an Open Web Services (OWS) 2.0 collaborative research program. As part of OWS 2.0, a map data Presentation Service was developed. A Presentation Service supplies vector map data to clients, typically “offboard” navigation systems. The goal of this experiment is to settle on the most lightweight yet sufficiently detailed delivery of content to insure that the Presentation Service will function adequately under real-world conditions. Starting with baseline XML schemas developed in collaboration with the Open Location Services (OLS) working group, we performed static analysis of instance XML documents generated from real map databases. We iteratively improved our XML schema, ultimately yielding XML documents less than 10% of the baseline size and less than 30% the size of a GIF image. We developed a client and server that demonstrate the practicality of the protocol that was developed.
