Safety in Numbers for Walkers and Cyclists
This letter addresses concerns that increased laws requiring helmets for bicycle use will reduce the amount of bicycling and the number of bicyclists. The author contends that the health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks, so it is better to reduce head injuries and accidents by providing high-quality cycle training, encouraging cyclists to be careful, improving cycling facilities, and improving road safety. The author reports some statistics from recent studies on the impact of fines for not wearing helmets, the use of helmet laws in Australia, research in the United Kingdom on the problem of more neck injuries associated with helmet use, and the issue of personal choice.
