A Consideration of Traffic Safety Statistics Using GPS On-board Unit

In this paper, we describe the feasibility of using an on-board freight management GPS unit for traffic safety aptitude testing. We conducted a basic experiment to determine whether we can estimate the probability of a traffic accident for a particular driver using only GPS data. We calculated acceleration distribution statistics using GPS data, and next clustered 3 types of drivers. We confirmed that strong acceleration and braking tend to cause traffic accidents especially when braking is stronger than accelerating, and right turning is stronger than left turning.
