Athenian Democracy and the Political Foundation of Space
The goal of balancing opposed social forces involved in bitter infighting drove the birth of democracy in classical Athens. The statesman Cleisthenes found the solution of a new framework for a constitution that was based on a strong relationship between citizenship and spatial control. As a results of this framework, the source of political power moved to the land itself, and no longer resides in fortune and bloodline. Therefore, Athenian space is political in nature.
