All Dressed Up with Durable Emulsions

Surface dressing is widely regarded as a cost-effective means of repairing worn pavements or restoring texture to a stretch of road. To ensure that surface dressing products perform well in changeable weather, surface dressing contractors are increasingly specifying durable bitumen binders that can hold aggregate chippings firmly in place. This article discusses the use of such binders in the U.K. One surface dressing contractor uses a pair of polymer modified emulsion binders: a premium grade material suitable for heavily trafficked roads and an intermediate grade suitable for sites with less traffic. The materials provide excellent grip on chippings and offer good elasticity, flexibility and tensile strength. The binders can be used for various surface dressing applications depending on the condition of the road to be renewed. The polymer modified materials are applied through spray bars that extend from 2.5 to 4 m in width. The spray jets on the bar are operated by a series of switches on the control panel. These jets and the extending bar give flexibility to accommodate many road widths.
