Coin Collectors
Smart technology may spell the end of an era of staffed tollbooths. Systems comprising cameras, computers and electronic radio antennae can gather data as vehicles drive past the equipment arrays. These can read payment tags mounted in the windshield and gather registration or license plate data where required. Such technology is being used or tested in many major cities throughout the world. Many U.S. highways are being built by tolling agencies, and smart technology could provide a further boost to such private-public partnerships. In Florida, for example, an open-road tolling system is being tested that could reduce congestion and boost efficiency on Florida's toll roads.
