Bus Rapid Transit: Cities Take a Cautious Approach
Bus rapid transit combines the guidance and speed of a tram with the rubber tires and lower costs of a bus. They also look more like rapid transit trains than like more conventional buses. This article examines bus rapid transit vehicles from four manufacturers: the Lohr Group (the Translohr system), Bombardier Transportation (the Guided Light Transit or GLT system), Civis, and the Berkhof/Advanced Public transportation Systems (the Phileas system). They are compared to one another and a brief overview of their technology is given. Markets where the vehicles are being developed or used are also discussed.
