HEAVY DUTY PAVEMENTS

The main types of heavy duty concrete pavements are highways, airfields and industrial hardstandings. Numerous design methods for the loadings peculiar to highways and airfields are available. Industrial pavements are subjected to a wider variety of loads, and such convenient design methods are not available. This paper reviews the factors which are common to the thickness design of all three pavement types and then discusses the loading conditions peculiar to each. A general consideration of joint design follows and finally some construction aspects are presented.
