Aircrew Ejection Experience: Questionnaire Responses from 20 Survivors

This article reports on a study undertaken to better understand the perspective of aircrew members who have survived an ejection episode. A total of 20 aircrew members completed a questionnaire designed to elucidate aircrew experiences related to ejection and how aircrew members would like to advise other aircrew to successfully handle ejection as an event. The mean age of the aircrew was 30.25 years (plus or minus 4.45 years). Most of them had logged more than 500 flying hours. Practicing ejection drills on the ground, being prepared at all times, making a timely decision to eject, and assuming correct posture were identified as the most important factors for success. Descriptions of ejection as an event suggest intense emotional arousal could occur following ejection. The authors conclude that individual variation makes the ejection experience a unique event for every aircrew. Variations include the nature of the emergency necessitating ejection, whether the ejection was planned or unexpected, and the occurrence of injury; each of these may possibly influence the entire experience. One appendix reprints the survey instrument.
