Berlin's Trams Head West, Slowly
The tramway of Berlin is being rebuilt despite financing problems caused by the economic difficulties of East Germany. In the 1930's Berlin had a large tramway network, which was reduced in the 1940's and 1950's. In the west, the trams were replaced by other public transportation, specifically bus and metro, while in the east the tram network was preserved. Recently construction on four priority work sites was begun. Originally planned to open in time for the 2006 World Cup, the trams and their new central station--the Berlin Hauptbahnhof-Lehrter Bahnhof--are expected to begin phased operation in 2007-2008.
