CTA RENEWS THE BLUE

This article discusses the massive improvement projects that recently concluded on the Chicago Transportation Authority’s CTA blue line. The nearly $500 billion project included the complete reconstruction of six elevated stations and two grade-level stations, new foundation for 80 percent of elevated portions of the line, new trackwork, new signalization, and a fiber optic network that connects all stations to the CTA Control Center. The article describes the construction process and the implementation techniques used to minimize negative impacts on the surrounding community as well as commuters. Funding sources came from a federal grant, the State of Illinois’ Illinois FIRST program, and the rest through regional funding sources. The contractor for the project constructed temporary stations which mitigated the necessity of staging platforms or working around train and commuter traffic. During span replacement, the contractor temporarily re-installed existing signal, communication, and traction power, working on these systems extensively once infrastructure was already in place.
