BENEFITS GAINED AND EXPECTED : KEY POINTERS FROM ITS EVALUATION
This article describes some of the benefits gained from Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) over the past decade, and what might be expected in the coming decade. The article reviews technologies developed in PROMETHEUS (Programme for a European Traffic with Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety), a major European joint research program. The article reviews ITS systems now available in passenger vehicles and its role in traffic management and public transportation. The article notes that integration of disparate ITS systems across national and regional levels requires agreements over architectural frameworks and development of standards.
