KEEPING THE TRAFFIC MOVING : THE RETURN OF AIR TRAFFIC TO THE NEAR-SATURATION LEVELS THAT EXISTED PRIOR TO 9/11
With air traffic levels returning to the levels prior to September 11 and no increase in capacity, congestion and delays are increasing again. Information technology (IT) solutions are the first place carriers are turning to in response. A number of providers are supplying integrated packages to manage aircraft better in the airport environment. A joint study by the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, and Northwest found a savings of 2,500 hours per year of outbound taxi time by using such tools. US airlines lose $3 billion annually to flight delays, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Airport software with simulation applications can help increase airport efficiency and capacity, and help reduce congestion. A study of FedEx's Memphis operation showed savings of 1.5 min. in taxi time per aircraft for a total of $10 million in fuel costs, using specific software. Delta recently employed IT solutions to smooth out peaks and valleys of takeoffs and arrivals of Delta aircraft at Atlanta, the world's busiest hub. The airline estimates a savings of $3.5 million in annual fuel costs and the equivalent of adding 19 aircraft, which have been freed up by the new efficiencies. Additional IT suites and approaches are also described.
