Closure to "Warping Stresses in Curved Box Girder Bridges: Case Study" by Ayman M. Okeil and Sherif El-Tawil
Closure to a discussion of an article with the aforementioned title, published in this journal (Vol. 9, No. 5, September 2004), is presented. The authors reiterate that their intention was to investigate the effects of nonuniform torsion on warping-related normal and shear stresses, rather than the effects of distortional warping. They also reiterate that although warping stresses due to nonuniform torsion are small in their limited study, this does not mean that warping effects are unimportant. Rather, the implication is that there could be a large subset of bridges where the warping effect is small enough to be ignored in design calculations. Additional work is needed to identify such bridges.
