Cooler Asphalts Can Consume Less Energy
Although most of the asphalt currently used in Western Europe is traditional hot mix, alternatives that consume less energy are being developed. This article describes some of these half-warm asphalts. Half-warm asphalts have the same practical benefits as hot mix, but at temperatures 30 to 40 deg C lower. This lower temperature makes a significant difference: carbon dioxide emissions are reduced and fumes emitted from bitumen are halved for every 10 deg C reduction in temperature. One process for achieving half-warm asphalt is to add special waxes to the mix that lower the viscosity of the bitumen. Another half-warm asphalt is based on foamed bitumen technology. Trials are currently being conducted on an asphalt mix that does not require a temperature above 100 deg C.
