Experimental Research on the Effects of Visual Environments on Driver's Speed Recognition

Drivers should decide their speed continuously depending on any environmental factors such as environments of vision, sound, vibration, and so on. It is believed that visual environments must be the most important for drivers' behavior. Road geometry and sight distances, the most important factors for designing the roadway for safe speed operation of vehicles, also affect on the drivers' visual dynamic environments. The aim of this study is trying to explain the reason why drivers moving on a wider roadway condition feel as moving slower than those with narrower roadway condition. The authors developed the 'Dynamic Scenery Picture Proposing and Controlling System', which is able to measure driving behavior and to have good number of experiment under controlled conditions with Three-Dimensional Computer Graphics (3D-CG) animation image in a laboratory. Using the system, experiments for identifying the speed recognized by subjects as same with a pair of dynamic sceneries from the driver's viewpoint with some vehicle speed and different road geometry are carried out. The 'matching method' developed in the field of Traffic Psychology are utilized for this identification analysis. The derived results from the experiments are examined by the two variables formularized by the authors. The variables are the angular velocity of moving visual stimuli from the viewpoint of driver's eyes and the frequency of visual stimuli. Through this analysis, the effects of some countermeasures installed in Japan for aiming to reduce the vehicle speed with roadway markings or side wall paintings are examined.
