GENERATION X : UNITED KINGDOM DEVELOPS THE FUTURE OF ROAD WEATHER INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Road weather information systems (RWIS) in use in the UK provide engineers with reliable road-weather forecasts, but usually with site-specific forecasts for only one sensor site in each climate domain. This article describes XRWIS, a new intuitive concept that gives separate road weather forecast for each salting route and an initial prediction as to which routes require salting, why it is required, what time it is needed, and the amount of salt required. The key to the success of XRWIS route-based forecasting lies in the construction of a geographical database for each salting route. By synthesizing the geography and microclimate of each salting route with the latest mesoscale weather forecasts, XRWIS will give highway engineers all the necessary information needed and will also lead to a more uniform decision making across a region or country.
