IS TIME ON YOUR SIDE? : APPROACHES AND INNOVATIONS FOR TIME-RELATED CORROSION OF PARKING STRUCTURES
This article discusses approaches and innovations in mitigating corrosion of parking structures. The author details the causes of corrosion as well as how to develop a repair solution. A number of strategies for strengthening and structural upgrading are discussed. These include section enlargement, external post-tensioning, external bonding of steel elements, strengthening with advanced fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, and span shortening. The article also relates how an innovative repair solution was implemented on an aging, seven story parking structure that was showing signs of corrosion.
