Experience of Rehabilitation Actions in South Africa

The aim of this paper is to present recent research conducted at the University of Pretoria in the field of pavement rehabilitation and recycling. The areas covered are the effect of cementitious and inactive fillers in bitumen emulsion and foamed bitumen recycled materials, and their effects on the engineering properties. An important aspect of this work is the method of obtaining material samples for performing the laboratory mix design. Rehabilitation thickness design is another interesting aspect, as a comparison between the layer properties before and after rehabilitation shows remarkable changes even if the layers were not touched. Experience with the construction of the layers has shown that recycling construction is more than simply reworking the layers with an in situ recycling machine.
