ENERGY BARS : POWERFUL SCREED HELPS CONTRACTOR REACH 99% COMPACTION AT AIR RESERVE BASE
This article relates how a high degree of compaction at the screed leads to successful hot mix asphalt (HMA) resurfacing. The article describes a project to upgrade a runway at the Homestead Air Reserve Base in southern Florida. The 2 mile long, 300 ft. wide runway features a 75 ft. wide concrete keel section running down the center and designed to absorb takeoffs and landings. Mix specifications for the pavement include in-place densities of 97% to 99%. A paver combined with a tamper bar and pressure bars brought about a high density at the screed, thus reducing the amount of rolling that was required. The article also describes how achieving good compaction on longitudinal joints was accomplished. This is critical to the safety and quality of the airfield, since poorly constructed longitudinal joints can lead to raveling which in turn can create high-speed foreign object debris (FOD) that is capable of damaging jet engines and aircraft.
