FLAME HARDENED VS HEAT TREATED AND MANGANESE CROSSINGS
The purpose of this test was to determine the relative value from a service point of view of flame hardened crossings, as compared with heat treated and manganese crossings. Two flame hardened, one heat treated and one maganese crossings were installed on new timber supports in a two over two track crossings, making an angle of 71 degrees 38'. All crossings were interchangeable. These crossings were installed on May 2, 1953. On the September 8, 1954, inspection it was found that excessive batter on one of the flame hardened crossings made renewal necessary. Initial cost, maintenance required, as well as service life indicate a preference for the heat treated crossing over the flame hardened.
