RETROFITTING VESSELS TO COMPLY WITH INEVITABLE LEGISLATION

The paper bears a direct relationship to the international "IMCO" conference on tanker safety and pollution in February 1978. It discusses the legal aspects of major conventions, and deals with the impact of inevitable legislation to a) reduce operational pollution, b) increase tanker safety, c) eliminate substandard ships. The cost of complying with such regulations in the case of retrofitting segregated ballast tanks, crude oil washing, clean ballast tanks and inert gas systems are given. Operational consequences are considered. Order from NSFI as No. 14794.
