Performance and Analysis of Incinerator Bottom Ash as Structural Fill
Bottom ash from a municipal solid waste mass burn incinerator was used to construct a structural roadway fill. Three 30 meter long by 3 meter high test sections were constructed: one of bottom ash, another of gravel and a third having a mix of these two materials. The test sections are part of an access road within a landfill. Instrumentation was installed during construction to monitor the performance of each fill section including settlement plates, slope stakes and lysimeters for leachate sampling. Samples of each material were obtained during road construction for laboratory testing of physical and chemical properties. The laboratory and field results show that bottom ash has very good structural properties for use as roadway fill, but the ferrous metals should be separated before use. The ash leachate contains high levels of soluble salts. Based on limited Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) testing, the bottom ash is categorized as non-hazardous under EPA guidelines although lead is problematic.
